Though he is missing half of both legs and part of one arm, Rajesh Durbal is a highly competitive triathlete. Three years ago, the Orlando businessman became the first triple amputee to finish the Hawaii Ironman Championships — the pinnacle of his sport.
But Durbal, 36, had to battle his way to the top largely on his own. He had no specialized training facility, no coach to guide him in the needs of physically challenged athletes, no role model to follow.
“My body mechanics are different, so I needed to learn strength training to compensate for that,” Durbal said. “It was basically trial and error.”
